Carlsberg Foundation contributes DKK 5 million to fellowship programme for Ukrainian scholars

As a result of the war with Russia, many Ukrainian scholars have had to leave their universities and give up their research. The Carlsberg Foundation is therefore contributing DKK 5 million to a pool which will finance an estimated 24 fellowships for scholars affiliated with Ukrainian universities. The fellowships will give these scholars an opportunity to continue their academic work in a safe environment at a Danish university for up to a year.

The programme’s total funding of DKK 15 million will be administered by Universities Denmark, the collective organisation bringing together all eight of the country’s universities. The programme should be seen in the context of other initiatives at Danish universities to help researchers following the invasion of Ukraine.

The actual fellowship programme will be managed by Scholars at Risk (SAR), an international network which aims to protect researchers and promote academic freedom. SAR has recently published a call for applications for the SARU fellowship programme with a deadline of 30 September 2022.

Applicants must hold a PhD and be affiliated with a Ukrainian university

Applications for SARU fellowships may be submitted by displaced active researchers affiliated with a research institution in Ukraine or by member institutions of SAR Denmark and should be sent to SAR Denmark. All universities in Denmark, the Danish Institute for Human Rights and the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) are members of SAR, and the National Union of Students in Denmark (DSF) recently also joined.

To be considered for a SARU fellowship, scholars must hold a PhD and be affiliated with a university in Ukraine.

As the programme has been set up as an emergency arrangement to help displaced scholars, customary academic assessment criteria such as bibliometrics and other research merits will carry less weight in the consideration of applications.
