Summary

In 1926, the Danish-Greek excavations at Kalydon (Aitolia, Greece) unearthed an exceptional cache of marble sculptures in the so-called Heroon, traditionally dated to c. 100 BC. The cache constitutes one of the most important finds from the Danish fieldwork at Kalydon, not only because of the relative paucity of sculptural finds in the region, but also because it offers unique insights into social and religious life among the Aitolian elite during the late Hellenistic period. This project re-examines the sculptures from the Heroon based on modern archaeological methods of documentation and scientific analysis.
