Summary

The publication of the 6 excavation diaries of Harald Ingholt stemming from his archaeological campaigns in Palmyra between 1924 and 1936 will bring to the forefront important and hitherto unpublished knowledge about the cultural heritage of Palmyra - since 1980 a UNESCO world heritage site - which has been damaged severely over the last decade. It will also bring to light new crucial information about the Danish engagement in the archaeological exploration of Palmyra in the Mandate time in Syria in a period when the archaeological research was highly internationalized. The digitisation of the diaries which are kept at Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek have been done within the framework of the Palmyra Portrait Project, which since 2012 has collected the largest corpus of ancient funerary portraits.
