Summary

The project aims at generating an in-depth analysis of the severe socio-economic crisis that Lebanon has been undergoing since fall 2019. Furthermore, the roots of the crisis - features related to the sectarianist system - and chances and constraints to tackle them are analyzed. The research puzzle that drives the project reads as follows: In the middle of Lebanon's most profound socio-economic crisis, the performance of its political class measured in terms of good governance indicators - ranging from providing services to combating corruption - has been very low. Thus, why has the Lebanese political class been able to stay in power (without having to use massive means of repression) although the Lebanese civil society is highly aware of the deficiencies of the political class?
