Summary
The Ice and Climate research group is setting new research goals and wish to establish a lightweight and mobile unit for drilling ice cores with an intermediate depth of up to 1,000 m and for logging existing and remote boreholes. We apply for funds to build the winch. We expect to test and use the winch at EGRIP, Greenland in 2023 for shallow 100 m ice cores. The winch is expected to be used with a modernized Hans Tausen ice core drill on Müllers ice cap on Axel Heiberg Island, Arctic Canada in 2024. Here we plan to drill a 700 m deep ice core to gain data on the evolution of the sea ice in the Arctic Ocean through the last 15,000 years.
