Summary

"The aim of the project is to complete the publication of the extraordinary wealth of primary research data produced by the Zea Harbour Project and Greek ministry rescue excavations. This fourth volume will mainly answer remaining questions concerning the harbour fortifications of Zea Harbour, but will also update shipshed architecture, the Arsenal of Philo, harbour topography, naval technology, and the history of Piraeus in the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Athens' naval base at Zea Harbour was the largest naval base in the Classical Greek world, covering an area of more than 50,000 m2 and housing up to 196 triremes (a 40 m-long warship with a crew of 200).
