Summary

At the heart of this project is the development of an analytical framework to analyze who and how governs what we eat: and how governance can enable food sustainability in Europe. Food sustainability concerns the economy, the environment and the society. However, existing forms of food governance over-rely on top-down hierarchical forms of decision-making by power-holding institutions and undermine the role of the society in the governance process. The outcome of this project will be a groundbreaking book that will address these gaps and make a crucial contribution for a more nuanced understanding of the governance of food sustainability in Europe. Debates on food sustainability have become a veritable growth industry in policy making and academia that render such a book necessary.
