Summary
Nano-science has delivered us experimental tools to study the electronic properties of single molecules. The aim of SMITH-F is to extend our experimental capabilities to measure single-molecule impedance for the first time. Impedance is the response of a molecule to an alternating voltage, similar to the alternating current we have flowing in conventional power lines, as opposed to the direct current we have in devices powered by batteries. Single-molecule impedance will allow us to determine the time- and frequency-dependence of a molecule's response to an applied bias. This information will allow us to significantly broaden our understanding of the electronic properties of molecules, opening up whole new classes of electronic components that can be designed from molecular materials.
