Scandinavia and the Tropical Atlantic

2017 saw the 100th anniversary of the sale of the then-Danish West Indies to the United States. The event was marked by a peak in public and scholarly interest in the former colony and in Denmark's status as colonial power. What have we learned, and where do we go from here? The book Scandinavia and the Tropical Atlantic offers an overview over the current status of the memory of colonialism and slavery in Denmark and its neighboring countries, and examines the traces of Scandinavian colonialism in Ghana and the Caribbean. Looking at examples from literature, film, art and tourism, the book lets the reader understand dominant narratives about Scandinavian colonialism and makes suggestions how we can fully recognize the colonial heritage on all sides of the Atlantic.
