Summary

This monograph examines how globalising forces in the nineteenth century affected the outlook and identities of contemporaries. Tracing the world-wide exploits of the young British radical Charles Dilke in 1866-7, it shows how early global sensibilities emerged, not as a response to the flattening effects of new technologies, but as a means of coping with the unprecedented disruptions they caused.
