What?

Patients with schizophrenia experience a profound, yet neglected sense of alienation. The innovative contribution of this interdisciplinary project is to rethink the framework of the spaces of care for severe mental disorders considering how to alleviate these experiences of not belonging through a philosophical perspective.

Why?

More than 24 million people are affected by schizophrenia worldwide and approximately 1 in 3 patients in psychiatric hospitals suffer from this illness. Yet, the outcome of psychiatric treatment has shown poor effects and between 50-75 % of persons with schizophrenia interrupt treatment, which leads to significant health, societal, and economical concerns.

How?

Through a combination of literature studies, case studies, from the perspective of the phenomenological orientation in psychopathology and the French tradition of “institutional psychotherapy” engaging critically with the notion of institution.
