What?

This project delves into the mathematical intricacies of how magnetic systems change under varying temperatures, by developing novel mathematical representations of the transition from smooth to rough material surfaces. Focusing on this concept known as the roughening transition, the work will provide a deeper understanding of the conditions under which magnetic materials alter their structure.

Why?

Magnetic materials are pivotal in a myriad technologies, but the intricate processes govern magnetic surfaces are not yet fully understood. The mathematical models developed provide insights into material behaviors and aspire to achieve a level of understanding comparable to the universal significance of Brownian motion - a cornerstone of probabilistic theory, which spans many scientific domains.

How?

By applying the principles of stochastic geometry, a groundbreaking mathematical method for illuminating the behaviour of complex systems. Drawing on both recent progress in fluctuating random surfaces along with the applicant's findings, all under the guidance of world-class mentors. This research is set in two of the world’s strongest environments for probability and mathematical physics.
