What?

The project explores innovative legal techniques and avenues that have been used to address accountability gaps for atrocity crimes committed during recent conflicts such as Syria, Myanmar, Ukraine, and Palestine. It investigates how these novel legal techniques and avenues can be combined to overcome limitations in the current international legal order and to strengthen it.

Why?

Recent conflicts have exposed the weaknesses of the international justice systems in delivering accountability for atrocity crimes. By examining these innovative legal strategies, the aims to provide insights for strengthening the international legal order and ensure more effective accountability for atrocities that may help restore faith in the international legal system.

How?

The project uses case studies in combination with legal and institutional analysis to assess how utilizing emerging and/or revitalized legal strategies can close accountability gaps. By exploring their combined potential, the project offers guidance for state governments, international institutions and relevant stakeholders on how to better pursue justice for atrocity crimes.
