Hvad?

We will establish a fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) system for chemical and metabolic imaging of single microbial cells in their natural environment.

Hvorfor?

Microorganisms drive all biogeochemical cycles on Earth and contribute essential functions to all other life forms - yet they act and interact at the microscale. It is thus challenging to directly measure their activities in real-time, and their chemical microenvironment and contribution to chemical transformations remains too often unknown.

Hvordan?

We will develop and apply fluorescent probes with nano- to microsecond lifetimes combined with modulated laser lines, to directly image the metabolic states of microbes together with their microscale chemical environment."
