Generational conflicts and solidarity from a family perspective

Expectations that the next generation will be better off than their parents are declining. Simultaneously, populations are ageing in many Western democracies and generational divides are arising around several issues, e.g. welfare spending and climate change opinion. Based on registry data from Denmark, this project will examine if and how opinion divides between different generations are mitigated through family ties. The place where people from different age groups most often interact is within the family. The personal experiences here can give insight into other generations’ viewpoints, increasing the willingness to support them. Hence, the expectation is that stronger family ties can foster more solidarity between generations.
